Upgrade all your Compaq Drivers automatically

If you own a Compaq computer, it should have come with an installation disc or a Compaq driver restoration disc. Most people file away their computer manuals and disc for later reference or to restore the system after a computer crash.

But did you know that you can also use these discs to restore your hardware drivers when something goes wrong with your hardware?

Of course, this only applies to hardware that came pre-installed from Compaq. Drivers are included on the disc for devices such as the motherboard, processor, graphics card, and other components that came from the factory. If you’ve added hardware on your own, the Compaq driver disc won’t have device drivers for those pieces.

What if you’ve lost the disc or never received one in the first place? Don’t worry, you can download Compaq drivers for your exact machine from the Compaq website which is now part of Hewlett-Packard. In fact, you’re probably better off bypassing the disc and downloading your Compaq driver directly from the site because you’re likely to get an updated version of the driver.

When should you update your Compaq drivers? The most obvious case is when your hardware stops responding as it should. Device drivers can get damaged or experience file corrupt or missing required files. When this happens, computer errors and hardware malfunctions occur. By restoring the missing driver, your problems should go away. You should also periodically check to see if new drivers are available because manufacturers regularly issue new drivers with added features or repairs for known issues.

Head over to the Compaq support website (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/cpq_support.html) to find out if any updated Compaq drivers are available for your computer. You don’t even need to do an inventory of the installed hardware on your computer because the website groups the drivers based on the computer’s model number and operating system.

For example, if you have a Compaq D315 desktop computer running Windows XP, a quick search will turn up all of the related software, BIOS information, device drivers, operating system enhancements, and utilities for that specific computer. Simply choose the Compaq driver or drivers update that you want to apply and click the Download button.

You can also download user’s manuals, Getting Started guides, and hardware reference guides for your specific computer at this website.

For devices that you’ve installed on your own, you’ll need to go to the device manufacturer’s website to obtain device drivers. For example, if you’ve installed a Microsoft optical mouse and want to update its driver, you’ll need to go to Microsoft to get the update. Likewise, if you upgraded your processor to an Intel product, you’ll need to go to Intel’s website to find the new device driver.

Another way to make sure that your Compaq PC has the right drivers is to use the built-in Device Manager to view and update your installed devices. You can launch Device Manager through the Control Panel by clicking the System icon and then clicking Device Manager. Some versions of Control Panel have a Device Manager icon that you can click directly.

Once in Device Manager, if you see any devices listed with a yellow triangle and an exclamation point, you’ll know that those devices are having problems. Open the malfunctioning device by double-clicking it. From here, you can update the device’s driver or troubleshoot the device if a Diagnostics tab is visible.

If you’ve already downloaded the updated driver, select the Update Driver button and choose “Browse my computer.” Locate the downloaded driver and follow the installation prompts. If you haven’t yet downloaded new drivers, use the “Search for new drivers automatically” option and let your computer search the Internet for updated drivers. If your computer finds new drivers for your hardware device, it will install them automatically. You can come back afterward and rollback the changes if you don’t like the results.

Keep your Compaq computer running at its best by taking care of hardware issues with updated drivers.
