Instantly Download & Update All Your MODEM DRIVERS Now!

Did you know that not all modems require a modem driver in order to function with your operating system?

This may come to a surprise to anyone who’s ever installed hardware as most hardware requires a device driver in order to work.

Essentially, a modem will either have a hardware controller (no modem drivers required) or it will lack a hardware controller (modem drivers required).

If your modem comes with a hardware controller, flash firmware is responsible for communicating with the operating system and making the modem work properly. Lucent/Agere Venus, Conexant/Rockwell ACF, and many US Robotics models come with built-in flash firmware rather than requiring the installation of modem drivers. An .INF file is used to define various command sets. Hardware controller based modems can be upgraded but only through a flash firmware update.

For modems that do not have hardware controllers, modem drivers are a must. Updating modem drivers for these types of modem requires knowing which version you are currently running and an updated driver.

When do you need new modem drivers? If your modem is having trouble connecting, is no longer working, is not installed properly, can’t connect, or disconnects frequently, you may benefit by updating the modem drivers.

Before you update the modem drivers, do some basic troubleshooting to rule out other issues. Modems are tricky beasts. You can use Device Manager to perform diagnostics on your modem first. Open Device Manager and double-click your modem. Go the diagnostics tab and hit Query Modem. This will run a few tests and bring back a list of results that may be useful as you try and determine what the problem is.

Check with the modem’s manufacturer’s website for detailed technical support about troubleshooting your modem. They could very well have solutions such as different initialization strings that you can use to address connectivity issues.

Another consideration before updating modem drivers is whether or not the modem is the problem. If your Internet connection is slower than usual, it may be a problem on your ISP’s end. For example, at peak times, speeds may slow down. This should resolve itself as usage drops off unless your ISP doesn’t have the capacity to adequately service its users.

If you’ve determined that you need to update your modem drivers, download them from your modem manufacturer’s website making sure to get the latest version for your exact modem and operating system. These may come as executable files that automatically launch an installation program in which case, all you need to do is follow the prompts.

If not, you’ll need to save them to your computer and use Device Manager to locate and install them. Launch Device Manager and find the modem in your list. Click the Driver tab and choose Drivers Update. Browse your computer to find the downloaded modem driver and follow the installation instructions on screen.

If your modem doesn’t show up in Device Manager, it’s likely a hardware controller modem. To flash the firmware, you’ll need to go to the manufacturer’s website and follow the instructions exactly. Installing firmware incorrectly can render your hardware permanently inoperable.

If your mode is operating just fine, there’s no need for updating the firmware unless the manufacturer has made major changes such as repaired serious errors or added new features that you want to use. When doing so, you must know your exact hardware model number and current firmware version. Compare your firmware version to the new one on the manufacturer’s website. Is the one posted newer? See if you can determine what new features or issues this firmware update addresses and decide if the enhancements make sense. Follow all instructions exactly and take care to be sure that you download the correct firmware update for your modem and operating system.

While many hardware issues are resolved by updating device drivers, many modem issues are trickier. A new modem driver might not do the trick if the problem resides elsewhere. In addition, modems with hardware controllers don’t require modem drivers, instead, they use firmware which is risky to update.
